Karkinos: The Crab
During the battle between Hercules and the Lernaen Hydra, Hera sent a giant crab named Karkinos to distract Heracles. Karkinos bit Heracles on the foot, but Hercules crushed Karkinos beneath his heel. Hera honoured Karkinos's loyalty and sacrifice by placing him amongst the stars as the constellation Cancer.
The myth highlights Cancers, loyalty, protective qualities, sacrifice, and defending something larger than oneself.
Thetis and Achilles
The Tarot card associated with Cancer is the Chariot.
The Chariot is victory in all its aspects. It is a process in which we conquer our fear, our spirit triumphs, and we come into a belief in ourselves, our abilities, and our path in life. The Chariot teaches that victory comes through the alignment of conflicting forces. It represesents confidence, and moving forward with direction and focus. As a card that is associated with the star sign Cancer, it represents channelling emotions, as well at times masking them. The Chariot asks us to put on our armour to protects us on our journey. The Chariot teaches that we can overcome a dificult situation, and control it if we understand opposing forces and maintain self-control. Arthur Edward Waite, the author of the Rider-Waite tarot describes the Chariot as assistance and support in times of hardship, providence, war, triumph, presumption, vengeance, and trouble. The two horses, or sphinxes in the case of the Rider-Waite Tarot, represent two opposing forces. These are the opposing forces of our rational mind and our instinctual nature. It also symbolises light and dark, conscious and unconcious, positive and negative, as well as light and shadow.
The Sphinxes represent victory of the mind on all planes and in trails of initiation. The Charioteer represents conscious, will that drives through life, not through force, but through inner mastery. This is symbolised in that there are no reigns controlling the sphhixes. The canopy of stars above the Charioteer symbolises spiritual / divine guidance.
The crescent moons on his shoulders represent, intuition, psychic sensitivity, receptivity, and the unconscious. On the head of the Charioteer is an eight pointed star, symbolising enlighted guidence. The Charioteer wears a belt adorned with Zodiacal symbols symbolising his alignment with the cycles and rhythms of universal forces. He has a square in the centre of his breast plate symbolising grounded, material reality. He holds a wand that symbolises conscious creation as opposed to domination. He is moving away from the city behind him, moving past what is known. A river flows behind him, symbolising the unconscious mind and his emotional fluidity. The Chariot itself symbolises movement and directed energy. On the Chariot is a winged emblem, symbolising transformation, and aspiration.
In the card of the Chariot, we move into life with purpose, open to our own abilities and sensitives. As with the star sign Cancer, the Chariot initiates emotional connection. The connections within the Chariot are that of the opposing forces that exist within us, and within life. With the Chariot we move through life with a determination guided by our inner purpose.
